The version you heard on the radio may not have been the original version, here’s why
The original version used the name COCA COLA. The BBC said they could not air the song because the name was seen as a “product placement”, so Ray Davies got on a plane and traveled 6000 miles from New York to London and back to record CHERRY COLA, so the song could be aired in England. The song went to #2 there, and peaked at #9 here.
