October 9th is Fire Prevention Day! According to legend, the Great Chicago Fire was started on October 8th, 1871…when “Mrs. O’Leary’s milk cow” kicked over a lantern in her barn…and by the time it was over two days later, 300 people were dead, 100-thousand were homeless and 17,500 buildings were destroyed. All within a 3.3-mile radius.
And while there’s nothing to prove that’s how the blaze actually started (the O’Leary’s always denied it), the notion of this holiday is still a good one.
, as well as a day to recognize the work of the firefighters who respond to them. This year’s theme? “Look. Listen. Learn.”
Fire Prevention Day, which kicks off the annual Fire Prevention Week, offers every day folks the opportunity to congratulate firefighters and promote various fire-prevention and fire-safety measures.
